Top Singapore Staycation Ideas: Learn a New Skill!
Wondering what to do on your next Singapore staycation beyond just relaxing at the pool, visiting new restaurants, or playing local tourist? Why not make it a ‘learncation’ by learning a new skill?
You’ve probably heard of edutourism (educational tourism), where travellers pick their holiday destinations with the prime objective of learning a new craft, sport, dance, cooking technique, or even language. A learning staycation provides you with the same experience, but at a much lower cost. And in Singapore, there is never a shortage of new things to learn.
Read on for some fun and practical skills that anyone can pick up during a weekend staycation in Singapore, as recommended by the Pan Pacific Hotels Group team!

1. Tuft a Rug (and Get an Arm Workout)
Suitable for: Home improvement enthusiasts

Fancy picking up a craft that everyone’s talking about? Give rug tufting a try!
Modern-day rug tufting (or using a tufting gun to ‘shoot’ yarn through a backing fabric) is fairly easy to get the hang of, but there is some physical strength involved in the process, so be prepared to feel a slight arm ache after your session. However, it will all be worth it, as you can create a personalised rug for your living room in just four hours—your rug can be square, round, or even a custom shape that you prefer. All you will need to prepare is a design that you like, so that you can project this design onto a fabric, draw it, and begin the hard work of tufting away!

2. Make a Beautiful Flower Dome as a Staycation Souvenir

Suitable for: Crafty girlfriends
Want to create an eye-catching gift for yourself or someone special? Flower domes make great gifts for any home, and your recipients will certainly appreciate the personal touch. Naturally, you could try this on your own, but at a flower dome workshop, you get to choose from a variety of preserved flowers, as well as enjoy the convenience of having all other materials like tools and jars provided for you. An instructor will also demonstrate how best to handle and arrange your preserved flowers, so that you will emerge from the class with a keepsake that you will be proud to show off.
3. Be a First-Time Kayaker
Suitable for: Couples and families who are comfortable with the water
What’s the difference between a canoe and a kayak? Although they are both paddle boats, they are shaped differently—a canoe is more ‘open’ in design while a kayak is more ‘enclosed.’ This means that one has to remain in a kneeling position while canoeing to maintain balance, while kayaking is done in a sitting position. Of the two, kayaking is said to be easier, and it is a great starter activity if you have never tried a water sport.
The Singapore Canoe Federation runs kayaking orientation programmes (for groups and pairs) at MacRitchie Reservoir Paddle Lodge and Kallang Water Sports Centre. For guests at our Pan Pacific Hotel Group properties in Singapore, Kallang Water Sports Centre would be the slightly more convenient location, although both spots are fairly accessible by public transport. Orientation courses are only two to three hours long, which will leave you with plenty of time for other staycation activities!

4. Be a (Pseudo) Tattoo Artist for a Day

Suitable for: Cool, artistic types
For a first-time tattoo artist wannabe, the idea of inking a real person can be intimidating, and you will hardly find a willing participant to experiment on! Thankfully there is a better way to ease yourself into the craft—by learning the basics while practising on fake skin. For added enjoyment, book a pseudo tattooing session with your friends and compete to see who has the best artistic touch. You will also get to bring your tattooed ‘skin’ home to add to your personal memorabilia collection.
For guests at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering, Singapore, this activity is located in a Chinatown studio just 10 minutes away.

5. Embrace Your Inner Rebel with Graffiti Art
Suitable for: 20-somethings, or families with teens
Looking for a bonding activity that will help you to relax and let go of your inhibitions—in a healthy way?
Living in Singapore, where randomly spray painting a wall (aka making graffiti) could land a person in jail, few of us have experienced the thrill of creating street art. However, there are now spaces where you can gather your loved ones to do this legally, as well as safely, with protective gear. Although you will not be in an official workshop setting with an instructor giving directions, it is a hands-on experience that will teach you the skill of expressing yourself without judgement, and this can be life-altering too!

6. Learn the Art of Woodworking

Suitable for: Those who love to work with their hands
How would you like to make your own cheese board, paring knife, or wooden toy car? You can sign up for half-day workshops to learn woodworking techniques from an artisan. If you are satisfied with your wooden creations, you can proceed to enrol in longer-term workshops to create your own guitar, coffee table, or chair!
The ability to build what you need (or want) will definitely give you a sense of empowerment. By rolling up your sleeves and doing it yourself, you will also develop a new appreciation of the efforts that go into craftsmanship.

7. Make Imperfections Beautiful at a Kintsugi Workshop

Suitable for: Kindred spirits seeking meaning or healing
Have you heard of Kintsugi? It is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery and ceramics, which dates back to the 15th century. In recent times, the practice has become popularised as a form of mental wellness therapy, where one can put together shards to create something whole—a symbolic representation for overcoming one’s own brokenness after facing a setback.
At a modern-day Kintsugi workshop, you will break a piece of pottery and put it back together again. It may seem counterintuitive, and if you are concerned, you can check if you are working with a rescued reject that will be given a new lease of life.
