The Essential Eco Travel Guide to Singapore

Wish to visit Singapore while travelling sustainably and supporting local communities? It’s easy to plan an eco-friendly itinerary for your Singapore trip!

Eco travelling doesn’t have to be inconvenient or limiting. For instance, the simple act of carrying a reusable water bottle will help to reduce the number of plastic bottles that flood our landfills. Another thing that you can do while in Singapore is to use public transport, as this tiny city state scores high on connectivity.

Discover Singapore, the Eco-Friendly Way

Reduce your carbon footprint while experiencing the best of what Singapore has to offer! Our environmentally friendly recommendations will help you to make the best of your ‘green’ vacation in this tropical city.

1. Choose Green Accommodation in Singapore

To set the right tone for your eco holiday in Singapore, look for hotels that prioritise sustainability, such as those with energy-efficient appliances or recycling programmes.

Love to be in the heart of the city? PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, Singapore, is the ideal city-centre hotel for eco-conscious travellers. We take sustainability seriously, with solar panels to power guest lifts, motion sensors to manage our energy needs, and the practice of using glass bottles. (Fun fact: the latter move reduces plastic consumption by some 360,000 plastic bottles per year!)

We’re also proud of our Urban Farm, which grows over 60 varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers used by in-house restaurants. The farm’s output provides nearly 20% of our hotel’s food supply, and contributes to food security and resilience. Having an Urban Farm also reduces our reliance on food deliveries, and ensures the produce served to guests is harvested at its peak.

Do you seek out cultural enclaves when you travel? PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering, Singapore, puts you in the vibrant Chinatown district, one of Singapore’s most popular destinations for visitors.

Winner of the World’s Leading Green City Hotel award, our sustainability practices include generating clean energy with solar panels, using electric cars for guest transfers, installing energy-efficient lamps and water-efficient fittings, and providing guests with only products that are biodegradable, paraben-free, and cruelty free.

We look forward to hosting you at either of our eco-friendly hotels in Singapore!

2. Go Plastic-Free

Here’s a fast fact for green travellers: The world produces more than 400 million tons of plastic every year, and half of these plastics are only used once before being discarded.

Although there are recycling efforts worldwide, only 15% of plastics are successfully given a second life, while a massive 8 million tons of plastics will enter our oceans annually. Keep this up and by 2050, we’ll have as much plastic in our oceans as there are fish!

To do your bit for the environment during your Singapore holiday, you can:

  • Bring a refillable water bottle everywhere you go, as Singapore’s water is safe to drink directly from the tap.

  • Carry a reusable bag for your shopping and grocery needs.

  • If you use plastic containers during your trip, place them in a recycling bin after use—but please rinse and dry food containers before recycling them. Here is a map of recycling bins in Orchard Road, Singapore’s premier shopping district.

3. Take Public Transport

You may have heard that Singapore has some of the most expensive cars on the planet, and this may be a source of angst for residents who wish to own cars. However, it has proven to be effective in encouraging the use of public transportation, effectively reducing traffic congestion and pollution in the city.

As a traveller who wants to do better for the planet, taking public buses and trains in Singapore is the best approach. Singapore has a superb train network, as well as buses that serve all parts of the country. You can use an app like Moovit to plan your journey, and save car rides for harder-to-reach attractions such as the Kranji Countryside.

4. Visit Nature Attractions

Here’s some good news for green travellers: most of Singapore’s natural attractions are within easy reach of its public transportation network! Here’s where to get in touch with nature while you’re in Singapore:

  1. Gardens by the Bay: This is a stunning park featuring futuristic ‘supertrees’ and flower domes, designed to showcase the best of Singapore's green initiatives.
  2. Singapore Botanic Gardens: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this popular city park is best known for its Orchid Garden, where over 60,000 plants are on display.
  3. Pulau Ubin: An island that has retained its traditional village feel, with unspoiled nature and wildlife. Visitors can go on nature walks or cycle around the island.
  4. MacRitchie Reservoir: A favourite spot for local nature lovers, hikers, and runners. It features a lush rainforest, and a treetop walk that offers lush views.
  5. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve: A bird-watching paradise, this wetland reserve is home to many migratory birds and other wildlife.
  6. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve: This is one of the few pockets of primary rainforest left in Singapore, making it an important site for conservation efforts. Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the reserve, and observe a wide range of plant and animal species that call this unique ecosystem home.

When visiting parks and natural areas, be sure to follow the rules. Always avoid feeding wildlife, and leave the plants and trees undisturbed.

5. Choose Walking Tours or Bike Rentals

It’s easy and fun to explore Singapore by foot or bike—this not only reduces your carbon footprint, but it’s also a great way to connect with locals and other travellers.

An interesting walking tour to join is Geylang Adventures, to explore the only legalised red-light district in Singapore. Run by a guide who grew up in the neighbourhood, the walk promotes understanding of those who seek comfort in vice, as well as those who cater to such needs. A portion of proceeds from the tour are donated to the charity Healthserve, which supports the migrant community in Singapore.

Prefer to get around on wheels? Let’s Go Bike Singapore runs history tours, food tours, and night rides that will show you how real Singaporeans live, work, and play.

6. Eat Local and Sustainably Sourced Food

Singapore has a diverse food scene, with many options for local and sustainable cuisine. Look for restaurants that use locally sourced ingredients and minimise food waste.

Peppermint Restaurant - PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay Peppermint Restaurant - PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay

At PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, Singapore, the all-day dining restaurant Peppermint lets you savour fresh harvests from the hotel’s Urban Farm. The kitchen is Halal-certified, and the menu includes plant-based options.

To find other eco-friendly restaurants to dine in during your Singapore getaway, search for farm-to-table or sustainable restaurants in Singapore. The Michelin-starred Labyrinth is a name that often comes up in “best of” lists—if you’re up for a splurge, this is the place to discover local flavours with a playful twist.

7. Dispose of Waste Properly

Travellers should note that Singapore has strict laws regarding littering. To stay on the right side of the law, always look for a bin to dispose of your trash. (It shouldn’t be hard to find one!)

For smokers, do keep in mind that the city has designated smoking areas, and that cigarette butts should be stubbed out and discarded in waste bins—outdoor bins have a metal holder specifically for this purpose.

8. Buy Less, or Support Sustainable Businesses

Do you really need another souvenir keychain? Be thoughtful about your consumption behaviour. If you need to buy gifts, you could look for food items with a longer shelf life, and try to purchase only products that use recyclable packaging. Or refer to this list of eco-friendly shops that you can visit during your Singapore stay.

However, if your priority is to build travel memories for yourself and your loved ones, focus on experiences—money is better spent on an enriching tour, or trying new cuisines together as a family. To capture these moments, take plenty of photos and videos, and keep a travel journal!
