Own a Pair of Clogs
Eng Ai Tee
Address | 30C Siam Road, George Town, 10120, Penang, Malaysia |
Before the rubber slippers you wear today, clogs were the slippers of yesteryears. Known as “kah kayak” in Hokkien and “terompah” in Malay, they were worn by the Nyonyas, Chinese, Indians and Malays. The tradition of wearing clogs can be traced all the way back to the island’s Dutch colonial days.
These red clogs were not just footwear, however. They are often used as decorations during Chinese weddings as they represent good fortune. Each pair is made by screwing a red or colourful piece of plastic on both sides of each clog.
