6 Singapore Places To Visit Near Orchard Road
“If you like the idea of getting lost in Asia, Singapore is the perfect place to start.” – Anthony Bourdain.
Welcome to Singapore, a little red dot of a nation that packs a powerful punch. A melting pot of cultures, the city-state is full of contrasts. While skyscrapers may fill the island, ethnic enclaves rich in heritage and culture can be found close to the city.
Nature lovers too can explore pockets of greenery interspersed throughout the island—Singapore is not called a “City in a Garden” for nothing. The icing on the Lion City’s cake are the gastronomic delights which await visitors to the island. Home to internationally-renowned Michelin-starred restaurants, Singapore is also the first country in the world with street food stalls crowned with Michelin stars.
With a robust public transport system, many of Singapore’s destinations are a train ride away from where you are. Simply hop on board its public buses or Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system which gets you to most parts of Singapore city.

Located a stone’s throw away from the Orchard shopping precinct, you can explore the park on your own or take a guided tour. Conducted on weekends, the walking tours are free.
If you wish to wander on your own, there are a range of trails to choose from. A popular one is the Heritage Trail, where you can explore the 47 heritage trees dotted around the compound. Maps available on the park’s website can be downloaded and accessed on your smartphone or tablet.
Depending on your interests, you can also visit smaller themed gardens, such as the Ginger Garden, Bonsai Garden, Evolution Garden, and Fragrant Garden. Each thematic zone is curated with flora grouped according to their types. The Evolution Gardens, for instance, showcases how plant families have evolved over millions of years—from ancient algae and mosses, spiky cycads, to modern-day flowering plants and trees.
Your little ones can also capture the joy of discovery at the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. The first garden in Asia dedicated to children, it provides a fun and conducive environment for children to learn about nature through play and discovery.
There are also monthly events at the park. Look out for the free weekend performances at the Symphony Lake—one of the Gardens’ three lakes.

Nestled in the heart of Singapore’s Civic District, Fort Canning Park lets you step back in time as you revisit the city’s history. The park’s iconic hilltop location is home to some of Singapore’s historic structures—they include 14th-century palaces, from the time when Singapore was part of the Majapahit empire, as well as architectural features dating from the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese during the Second World War.
Today, the park opens its lush green arms to nature lovers and history buffs, and is one of the more quiet places to chill in Singapore. While you stroll along the park’s paths, you will see ruins of the old fort erected when British statesman Sir Stamford Raffles was placed in charge of the city-state in the 1800s.
One of the highlights at the park is the Maritime Corner, which gives visitors an insight into the Singapore’s early days as a port. There is an easy trail to follow, with exhibits along the way to satisfy your curiosity. Along the way, you may also discover a Spice Garden, the ASEAN Sculpture Garden, and Battle Box, a former WWII underground military complex.

One of the must-dos here is to visit the precinct’s colourful Hindu and Sikh temples. There are a handful to choose from—we recommend the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, and Central Sikh Gurdwara Temple. These popular places of worship will give you a rich and deep glimpse into Singapore’s Indian culture.
There are several festivals celebrated in Little India too. Depending on when you arrive, you can participate in Deepavali (the Festival of Lights, usually in late October every year), Pongal (a harvest festival, usually every January), or Puthandu, the Tamil New Year (usually falling on 14 April). During these periods, Little India transforms into a magical wonderland of lights.
You cannot leave Little India without visiting Mustafa Centre. Operating around the clock, this expansive complex may not be as fancy as the malls in Orchard, but it sure is comprehensive. Pick from over 30,000 items—from jewellery and household appliances to fresh produce.

Wish to sample the dishes that Rachel Chu from Crazy Rich Asians dined on? Newton Circus Food Centre is the place to be. With close to 100 stalls, you can find food from different cultures in abundance here.
One of the must-tries here is the barbecued sambal stingray from Guan Kee Grilled Seafood. Grilled to perfection, this dish is dribbled with a generous serving of sambal chilli that would satisfy anyone who loves a spicy kick in their food. If your palates are unable to take the heat, go for the milder Barbecued Chicken Wings from Weng’s BBQ Chicken Wing.
Flame-cooked over charcoal with a crispy exterior while soft and juicy inside, the smokey-flavoured tender wings are so finger-licking good that it is hard to just stop at one.
Another local favourite is fried carrot cake. This dish is available at most food centres around the country but if you want the best, go for Heng Carrot Cake here at Newton. Interestingly, Singapore’s version of the carrot cake does not use carrot—instead, chunks of turnip are fried with a savoury egg and sauce mixture. Done right, it melts in your mouth and leaves a delightful aftertaste.

It is here at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice stall at Maxwell Food Centre that famed chef Gordon Ramsay first learned to cook the ubiquitous Singaporean dish. The late Anthony Bourdain once said the chicken rice here was so fragrant and delicious that it could be eaten on its own. Awarded the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand award, the stall is famed for its legendary queues—head there in mid-morning to avoid long lines.
Some stalls at Maxwell offer dishes not commonly found around Singapore, like the Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake stall. Its famous dish, the oyster cake, is a round-shaped deep fried snack, crispy and packed to the brim with fillings like oysters and minced pork. A traditional Fuzhou (a dialect group in Singapore originating from China) dish, food stalls that sell this dish have dwindled in recent years making this dish even more precious and worth trying.
Do also make space in your tummy for dim sum from Special Shanghai Tim Sum, porridge from Zhen Zhen Porridge, or fish ball wanton noodles from Fu Ji. If you are visiting in a group, you can order an assortment of dishes and share.
