Bangkok is generally safe for travellers with children, but the standard travel precautions should be taken. Below are some tips for safeguarding your family’s well-being during your Bangkok holiday:

• Don’t carry your passports with you. Pickpocketing and theft are common in Bangkok, and you will be better off leaving your passports at your accommodation. If you need identification, a passport photocopy or scan should suffice.

• Bangkok has a high road accident rate. A third of accident victims are pedestrians, so be extra careful when crossing roads. 

• Drink only bottled water in Bangkok. Although Bangkok has potable water, the water often moves through old and broken pipes before entering the tap, leaving it vulnerable to contaminants. 

• To prevent a case of ‘Bangkok Belly,’ i.e. food poisoning, stick with piping hot food and avoid iced drinks from street stalls. Also say no to anything raw, such as seafood and fruit. 

• Another rule of thumb is to only patronise food outlets with a healthy crowd. If you are visiting an attraction, you can ask the staff for food recommendations nearby.

• Worried about miscommunication and fare disputes with Bangkok’s taxi drivers? It’s much more hassle-free to use the ride-hailing app Grab instead.

Be respectful about the Thai royal family, as Thailand has a lese-majeste law in place, with stiff penalties for insulting the monarchy. A common situation that your family might face is hearing the Thai royal anthem played before a film screening in a movie theatre—if you notice most people in the theatre standing, it’s probably best to do the same.

Planning to shop and eat at Central World? Be sure to drop in at the indoor playground Playmondo. It’s for children up to 13 years old, but note that kids need to be at least 0.75m tall to enter. There are four play zones here, inspired by deserts, oceans, volcanoes, and forests. Let your kids crawl, climb, jump, and play to their hearts’ content!

For fans of water theme parks, head to Pororo AquaPark Bangkok at the Central Bangna mall. In store for you is 10,000sqm of water fun, including speed slides, a splash playground, a jacuzzi pool, and a ‘lazy river’ for tubing (floating down the water for relaxation). Children under 1.2m must be closely supervised by an adult, and there is a shallow pool that younger children can splash in.

Not a fan of crowded theme parks and playgrounds? Consider visiting the Bangkokian Museum—a compound of wooden bungalows from the early 1900s, nestled in a lovely shady garden. There is space for children to move freely, and parents can seek a peaceful respite from the city. Within the houses, you can peek at the life of an upper-class Bangkok family, and get a quick lesson on the history of Bangkok’s Bang Rak district.

For a cultural experience that young ones will enjoy, bring your family to Baan Silapin, also known as The Artist’s House. Located by a canal and accessible by car or boat, this is where the entire family can watch a puppet show, or let creative juices flow at an art workshop. Should neither activity be available during your visit, settle at the in-house cafe for snacks and drinks, to relax and observe the rhythm of life along the river.

Oceanariums are fantastic places to take kids, even babies, for a visual treat. At SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World, located at the family-friendly Siam Paragon, there are over 30,000 fish on display! Be sure to time your visits with the feeding shows, and if you have older kids, consider signing up for adventure experiences such as shark diving and riding in a glass-bottomed boat.

If your kids are fascinated by slithery creatures, take them to the Bangkok Snake Farm to marvel at preserved snake bodies, as well as catch a ‘live’ snake performance featuring venomous cobras. To get away from Bangkok’s swanky megamalls, take your kids and teens to the Easy Karts Go-Karting Centre, which is located at the RCA Plaza, a low-key mall mostly patronised by locals. Keen to drive an all-terrain vehicle through a ‘forest park?’ Bangkok ATV Adventures@Suksawat Rama2 is the place to be. 

Don’t worry if this is your first time on an ATV. There will be coaches to show you the ropes, and you should be able to proceed smoothly after a quick brief. You’ll get to drive uphill, downhill, through bridges, and under trees for about 30 minutes—if that’s not enough, simply book a second session!
