Art and Garden is the product of years of gardening by glass artist Fuan Wong. Starting his collection of plants at home, it eventually became too big, and had to be moved to his family’s durian orchard. The 8-acre land now boasts not only an abundance of flora, but also a variety of the artist’s glass sculptures, paintings, and colourful mosaic. Installation art by other artists and ceramicists can also be found in the garden.

When travelling around George Town, it’s inevitable that you’ll come across the famous street art of Ernest Zacharevic, scattered all over the old streets. His beautiful hand paintings often reflect the simple, rustic lifestyle of Malaysians in the past. Most of his artworks are a combination of painting and installation, enabling visitors to relate them to the local community. Some of his creations include The Trishaw Man, Kung Fu Girl, Broken Heart, Old Motorcyle, and Little Children on a Bicycle.

A fun and humorous way to discover the history of life in Penang is to take a tour around George Town, and visit the welded iron wall caricatures. Accompanied with captions, each caricature is an interpretation of the culture of Penang and how things were done decades ago. There are 24 iron wall caricatures around the city in total. Established by two artists, Alfred and Jeff, in 2007, a2 Gallery occupies a unit in a colonial house, which in itself is an attraction. Most of the collections in the gallery consist of contemporary modern art pieces, although there are other genres of art featured as well. Workshops are held regularly for those who are keen to learn more about art and its history. What’s more, some of a2 Gallery’s paintings can be found in PARKROYAL Penang Resort as well.
