Top Attractions to Visit During Your Langkawi Holiday

Does Langkawi island have enough natural tourist attractions to make it a good place for a short holiday? Yes, for two big reasons!

First, you may have heard that Langkawi is the best travel destination in Malaysia for duty-free shopping, and this is true. Langkawi was given duty-free status in 1987 to draw in more tourists. Since then, Malaysian locals and visitors alike have piled onto the island for shopping sprees!

To enjoy savings compared to regular store prices in Malaysia, you can pick up the following duty-free products in Langkawi:

  • Chocolates
  • Alcohol
  • Perfumes
  • Cookware and cutlery
  • Bags and suitcases
  • Sports shoes and sportswear
  • Personal care products
  • Electronics

However, do note that not all of Langkawi’s stores are duty free, so check with a store before you make a purchase. Also, some popular duty-free stores have been known to inflate their prices—to ensure that you score the best deals, get recommendations for the best duty-free shops from your hotel concierge before you head out.

The second (and better) reason to visit Langkawi is for its natural geological attractions, some of which are 550 million years old! In this guide to Langkawi’s top attractions by the PARKROYAL Langkawi Resort team, you will learn which is the best geoforest park in Langkawi to visit, along with other top places of interest that will make your Langkawi holiday memorable.

Langkawi’s Best Attractions and Activities

Find out where are the best places of interest in Langkawi, as well as the top things you can do during your Langkawi getaway!

Spend a morning at Underwater World Langkawi

More than 4,000 sea creatures await you at the 60,000 sqft Underwater World Langkawi, one of the largest aquarium attractions in Southeast Asia. Explore the aquarium’s various marine habitats, such as its “tropical rainforest and river ecosystem,” and walk through a 15m “tunnel tank” to view sharks, giant stingrays, and other denizens of the deep.

Enjoy Langkawi’s Loveliest View

For the best views in Langkawi, head to Mount Machinchang—Langkawi’s second-highest peak (at 850m), and Southeast Asia’s oldest rock formation, dating back to 550 million years ago!

At the foot of the mountain, you can take the SkyCab cable car ride to get to the Middle Station, where you’ll already enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Andaman Sea. A further ride will take you to the Top Station, where you can better appreciate the mountain’s natural formations, and soak in even more spectacular views that stretch across the shimmering waters, the surrounding Langkawi islands, and as far as southern Thailand.

Once here, you can also take a 10-minute walk through a jungle trail to reach the exhilarating SkyBridge—the world’s longest curved suspension bridge (125m), which connects two of Machinchang’s smaller peaks. Those with mobility issues can skip the walk and hop on the SkyGlide to get to the bridge.

Cool Off at the Seven Wells Waterfall

During your SkyCab ride back to the base of Mount Machinchang, you will catch a glimpse of the Telaga Tujuh or Seven Wells Waterfall, also known as Langkawi’s most picturesque waterfall attraction.

Here, water streams cascade down from the mountain and feed into seven sparkling natural pools, which are accessible 24/7 to visitors. The lower pools can be reached in about 200 steps, while you will need to climb over 600 steps to reach the upper pools.

It’s a 17-minute walk from the SkyCab base station—many SkyCab visitors do head over to the Seven Wells for a quick hike, with the refreshing reward of a dip in the waterfall pools thereafter!

Spend the Day at a Wildlife Park

Visit the Langkawi Wildlife Park, and you’ll get to see over 50 species of birds such as the deadly cassowary, the regal crowned crane, and the flamboyant flamingo—in fact, did you know that a group of flamingos is called a ‘flamboyance?’

This park is also home to 150 species of animals, from tiny leopard geckos to predatory saltwater crocodiles.

But it’s not the diversity of its inhabitants that makes the Langkawi Wildlife Park stand out. Instead, a trip here is unforgettable because the park is committed to providing close interactions with its animals. This is the place to have birds nibbling out of your palm, walk among free-roaming animals, and indulge in daredevil feats such as draping a beautifully patterned Burmese python around your neck. Children especially will relish the experience!

Take a Mangrove Tour at Kilim Geoforest Park

Haven’t heard of a ‘geoforest park’ or ‘geopark?’ Well, these are nature sites with geological attributes that are scientifically or historically significant. Typically protected and developed for the benefit of locals, such parks are often monetized through ecotourism and other sustainable economic and cultural activities.

Langkawi has three geoforest parks—Machinchang, Dayang Bunting, and Kilim. Of these, the Kilim Geoforest Park is the most popular with visitors. What’s the best thing to do at Kilim Geoforest Park? We recommend that you book a mangrove tour to enjoy the following:

  • Taking a river cruise

  • Visiting a floating fish farm

  • Eagle watching

  • Visiting a bat cave

  • Visiting a crocodile cave

With a four-hour tour, you can also visit locations that highlight Kilim’s fossil diversity, where you can spot:

  • Ancestors of modern insects

  • Ancient snails and slugs (gastropods)

  • Precursors of the modern-day octopus and nautilus (cephalopods)

If this is your interest, be sure to specify that you would like to stop at Langsuir Cave and Anak Tikus Island (Fossil Island) during your tour. If not, you can simply opt to feed fish or relax at the beach!

Hike to the Top of Langkawi’s Highest Peak

Gunung Raya mountain Langkawi Gunung Raya mountain Langkawi

At 881m, Gunung Raya has the honour of being Langkawi’s tallest mountain, and fortunately for most visitors, getting to the top is fairly easy. One can either arrange to be driven up, or choose to take the stairs—if you’re willing (and in shape) to climb over 4,000 steps.

Game and fit enough to go on foot? The mountain climb should take you about two hours, but note that jungle leeches are fairly common here, so do take the necessary precautions to avoid leech bites!

Once you reach the peak, reward yourself by inhaling the fresh air and revelling in the gorgeous scenery. Need to refuel? There is a resort here, with restaurants where you can have a drink and light bites, or a full meal. However, as prices can be steep, you may be better off holding out till you return to base.
