How to Enjoy a Hotel Holiday at Home

Counting down to your next overseas vacation? We too await the day where travels are no longer on pause!

In the meantime, why not recreate the pleasures of holidaying in a luxury hotel, without leaving the comforts of your home? In the wise words of Singapore’s former prime minister Goh Chok Tong, “Even within the confines of our home, our mind can roam free.”

To reap the benefits of a getaway while you’re safely ensconced at home, you’ll need experiences that:

  • Boost your energy and creativity levels

  • Accentuate your five senses

  • Make you feel happy and calm

  • Enhance your physical and emotional health

  • Inspire you to lead a better life

Wondering how to make all of this happen? The PARKROYAL on Beach Road team has a few ideas for you!

Stir Up an Adventure in Your Kitchen

“I like the fact that the hotel business is all about people, and about creating extraordinary experiences that make a guest’s day memorable,” says PARKROYAL on Beach Road’s Executive Chef Vincent Aw. “I wanted to pursue that with the cuisines I create.”

Like our executive chefs, you can make the culinary magic happen in your home kitchen. Use their recipes as a guide, but don’t hesitate to experiment with your own variations!

Begin by brewing a nourishing broth, known as the Dried Octopus with Lotus Root Soup. According to Chef Vincent, this soup is good for aiding digestion, as lotus roots are rich in dietary fiber and low in cholesterol and saturated fats.

Once you’ve made the radish rolls, you can arrange them in the shape of a lotus flower, as shown above, or let your imagination guide the way. Of course, do stay safe in the kitchen as well—watch Chef Vincent’s tips on how to ensure your food is properly cooked.

Need a break from kitchen duties? Order in from the Sichuan Dou Hua Restaurant! Our à la carte menu features savoury delights such as the evergreen spicy favourite "Chong Qing" Diced Chicken with Dried Chilli, Smoked Fish with Mixed Spices, and Minced Chicken Soup with Fungus. You can also tantalise your palate with our extensive selection of Cantonese and dim sum delicacies.

Sit Back, Chill, and Let Your Mind Wander

Our General Manager at PARKROYAL on Beach Road, Paolo Campillo is deadly serious about his work—read his list of Lessons Every Hotelier Should Learn! Even if you’re not a hotelier, you can draw inspiration from Paolo’s work ethic, which is grounded in kindness, humility, and the desire to do better.

But we can assure you that when he’s off duty, Paolo is the expert on letting loose and having fun! Watch this video to learn how to prepare his signature Gin & Tonic:

Here’s how you can do it too:

  • Place ice in a glass.

  • Add a shot of Citadel Gin.

  • Add three shots of tonic water.

  • Add a few drops of Bittermens Hopped Grapefruit bitter or Fee Bros orange bitters.

  • Add a dash of pepper. (This is Paolo’s secret recommendation!)

With your drink in hand, you’re ready to sink into your favourite chair with a good book. To take your mind to faraway places, Paolo recommends literary gems like The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho or Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.

If you’ve already read these—and are in the mood for weightier topics—consider the suggestions on Bill Gates’s Summer Reading List.

Learn Simple Acupressure Massage for Self-Care

Have you been experiencing more eye fatigue than usual? It’s probably due to the extra screen time during this period of staying home. To relieve eye strain, massage your eyes daily, according to these pressure points, says Physician Wu from PARKROYAL on Beach Road’s St. Gregory Spa:

  • Jing Ming (“Bright Eyes”)

  • Zan Zhu (“Bamboo Gathering”)

  • Yu Yao (“Fish Loin”)

  • Si Zhu Kong (“Silk Bamboo Hole”)

  • Cheng Qi (“Tear Container”)

  • Tong Zi Jiao (“Pupil Bone Hole”)

For best results, massage each acupressure point on both eyes—simultaneously—for one minute in a circular movement. Physician Wu recommends that you carry out this massage twice a day.

Need more gentle healing? Try this series of Acupressure Point Massages, where you’ll press on specific points on your hand:

内关 Nei Guan (“Inner Pass”)

合谷 He Gu (“Joining Valley”)

内劳宫 Nei Lao Gong (“Inner Palace of Labour”)

Press and release on the acupressure points above for five minutes on each palm—or about 100 times on each “acupoint.”

Physician Wu says that doing this daily will help improve the blood circulation to your limbs, as well as rebalance the “qi” of your inner organs!
