Best Vancouver Nature Activities for Family Staycations

Vancouver has what many cities don’t—a genuine respect, or even reverence, for nature. This makes it perfect for nature-focused family staycations.

For instance, the trees at the city’s popular Stanley Park have acquired iconic status in their own right, and a recent book, titled “Legacy of Trees,” was published to honour the park’s stalwart inhabitants. “The trees in Stanley Park link us to our past—the past of Vancouver—while also tying us to our present,” said the author.

Apart from Stanley Park, many of Vancouver’s local places of interest are well-suited for nature lovers of all ages, which makes the city ideal for a green family staycation. A salve for the soul, an eco-friendly Vancouver local vacation helps you to extricate yourself from the distractions of daily life, and devote time and attention to the people who matter.

Top Vancouver Nature Attractions for Kids Under 12

Bask in nature and have a grand time at these baby-friendly and child-safe Vancouver attractions!

Stanley Park

Named after Canada’s governor-general in the late 1800s, Stanley Park is the best place to kick off your Vancouver staycation with kids. Cycle or rollerblade along the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path, explore forest trails, or make it your goal to visit all four of the park’s playgrounds.

You can also cool off at the water park, frolic at the beaches, or swim in an outdoor heated pool. Get a full list of Stanley Park activities here, and see some fun suggestions for exploring the park (e.g. a horse-drawn carriage tour) here. Remember to take keepsake family photos at the Hollow Tree!

Kitsilano Beach

For a successful staycation with kids, keep itineraries simple by heading to family-friendly Vancouver attractions that offer hours of entertainment, with nearby food options. A popular choice with Vancouver families is the well-maintained Kitsilano Beach, or “Kits Beach” as it is better known.

Here, tots can play in the shallow area of the heated saltwater pool, while kids will enjoy the inclusive playground, designed for children of all abilities to have fun. As for you parents: let your kids play, while you sit back to enjoy the glorious city and mountain views!

When hunger strikes, head to The Boathouse Restaurant to rest and refuel, before hitting the beach again.

Maplewood Farm

Kids love zoos, but parents are well aware that zoo visits can be exhausting! Farms, on the other hand, are less daunting to navigate, with just as much to offer to kids and families.

At Maplewood Farm, there are over 200 farm animals for your little ones to meet and greet—you can watch a milking session, feed the chickens, ducks, and bunnies, and witness what a day in the farm is like. (Note: you can purchase bird seed from the farm for the chickens and ducks, but you will have to bring your own supplies to feed the bunnies.)

Southlands Heritage Farm

Another Vancouver farm that will be a hit with families, the Southlands Heritage Farm also runs a Kids Farm Club for homeschoolers to learn more about life cycles in a farm environment—you can find out more about this programme during your visit! Kids can enjoy pony rides or take riding lessons here, while parents shop at the Farmer’s Market.

VanDusen Botanical Garden

Let your kids’ hide-and-seek fantasies take flight at the VanDusen Garden, where you can lose yourself amongst 3,000 pyramidal cedars, fashioned into a maze. Once you have conquered the labyrinth, proceed to explore the rest of the garden by downloading a self-guided tour.

Get directions to VanDusen Botanical Garden (15-minute drive from Pan Pacific Vancouver)

Honeybee Centre

Take a one-hour private hive tour at the Honeybee Centre, a Vancouver honey farm and visitor attraction. Learn about the intriguing world of honeybees through the hands-on exploration of an active beehive. You will suit up in protective gear, light a bee smoker (a device used to calm honeybees), observe honey bees at work, and watch the birth of new bees! All ages are welcome, but the tour is recommended for kids aged seven and up.

Chilliwack Corn Maze & Pumpkin Farm

The Chilliwack Corn Maze & Pumpkin Farm is an hour’s drive from the city, but the commute will be well worth it! Aside from the pumpkin patch, one of the farm’s main draws is its kid-friendly maze experience, with interactive challenges to solve. Kids will also enjoy playing on the giant “jumping pillow,” going on tractor and pedal cart rides, exploring the pumpkin patch, and seeing farm animals. You can also have a light meal at the farm—check their menu for the latest offerings.

Richmond Nature Park

Black Tailed Deer at Richmond Nature Park Black Tailed Deer at Richmond Nature Park

The standout fact about Richmond Nature Park is that it consists of 200 acres of peat bogland— tell your kids that this is 1.2 times the size of Disneyland! While raised peat bogs (dome-shaped heaps of peat that occupy former lakes or shallow land depressions) may not sound appealing, the park’s beguiling charm lies in its abundant wildlife. Home to more than 100 species of resident and migratory birds and at least 13 species of mammals, visitors to Richmond Nature Park can expect to find all manner of creatures—from tiny shrews to black-tailed deer.

Four walking trails totalling 5km give visitors the chance to encounter plants and animals in bog, forest, and pond habitats. Wheelchair accessible, the shortest and most kid-friendly option here is the elevated boardwalk around the park pond. Once you arrive, pick up a free trail guide at the park’s Nature House, or download this self-guided walk and be on your way!

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

Capilano Suspension Bridge Cliff Walk Capilano Suspension Bridge Cliff Walk

Wary about walking across the Capilano Suspension Bridge—a swaying bridge where royalty and celebrities have graced their presence? Be comforted by the fact that even though it is a “simple suspension bridge,” its anchoring cables are strong enough to hold up a fully loaded 747 airliner!

Do also bring your children on a Treetops Adventure involving seven suspension bridges (and stairs) and a Cliffwalk—the latter comprises suspended walkways that jut out from the granite cliff face above Capilano River. Together, these gravity-defying trails give visitors access to previously unexplored areas of the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. You can cover the bridge alone with a baby in a carrier without too much trouble; that would take you about 45 to 60 minutes in a 2km loop trail. If you are bringing kids along, use your discretion to decide which areas are sufficiently safe for them.

Whale Watching

If you would like to get as close as you can to orcas (killer whales), book a whale-watching tour with Wild Whales Vancouver. The company is one of the few allowed to conduct these tours at close range after demonstrating responsible wildlife viewing practices for many years.

You might also see humpback whales during your tour, along with other oceanic wildlife such as harbour seals. If your kids are prone to motion sickness, book the partly-sheltered or open-air experience for a smoother ride. As a precaution, carry motion sickness pills with you, and give them to your kids about 30 minutes before the tour begins.

Get the Chills at Stanley Park

Every place has its dark secrets, and Stanley Park is no exception. Beneath the park’s lush greenery lies a past marked by hidden graveyards, notorious crime scenes, and the ghostly lore of Deadman’s Island

Book the two-hour Dark Secrets of Stanley Park evening tour to discover Stanley Park from this spine-tingling perspective! Do note that from mid-September to November, morning tours are held instead, because of the earlier nightfall; this may be the better option if your family is easily spooked.

Climb a Secret Tree in the Cambie Corridor

Have your kids missed out on tree climbing fun in their early years? There is still time to catch up on this simple joy! Making its presence felt in an otherwise unobtrusive Vancouver neighbourhood is a majestic tree known as the Cambie Climbing Tree. One reason for its popularity with tree-climbing enthusiasts is its favourable branch structure (where branches grow closely together), which facilitates a climb to the top, even for novices. The reward for reaching the treetop? An unforgettable view of Vancouver’s skyline and the North Shore mountains. But do exercise caution and beware of slippery branches—this activity is better suited to nimble individuals who are comfortable with heights.

Take a Day Trip to Grouse Mountain

Grouse Mountain Vancouver Grouse Mountain Vancouver

If you choose to visit Grouse Mountain, you should set aside a full day for the activities. Year-round options include visiting the Grouse Mountain Refuge for endangered wildlife, going on a Ropes Adventure (an aerial ropes course), and taking a zipline tour across the peaks and canyons of Grouse and Dam Mountains.

Get a (Free) Bridge Experience at Lynn Canyon Park

Fancy a suspension bridge adventure, but one that is completely free? The Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge is older and narrower than the Capilano Suspension Bridge (see above), but it offers similar thrills. And unlike the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, which charges for bridge access, there is no admission charge to enter the Lynn Canyon Park. It is a great place to go hiking or swimming (during the summer months), and settle down to a family picnic after.

Go Fishing with a Guaranteed Haul

Did you know that British Columbia is considered by many as one of the best salmon-fishing regions in the world? If you have not gone on a fishing adventure before, book a charter boat with Bites On Fishing, which leaves from the city for half-day or full-day tours. Concerned about storing your haul during your staycation? Simply check with them about getting your catch processed and delivered to your home.

Bond Over a Joyride

Is yours a family of cycling enthusiasts? Book a day tour with Island Joy Rides (bikes included) to explore Quadra Island or Campbell River. For those interested in a trip to Campbell River: if a leisurely paddle—on a canoe—is preferable, that option is available too.

Try Skimboarding for the First Time

Skimboarding in Vancouver Skimboarding in Vancouver

What is the difference between skimboarding and surfing? You can think of skimboarding as a form of surfing, but in shallow water. To learn how this actually works, sign up for private family lessons at Kayotics—a popular place for learning skimboarding is Centennial Park, but they teach at other locations too.

Explore the Othello Tunnels

The Othello Tunnels are a series of old train tunnels and bridges that pass over the wild Coquihalla River—that alone should be enough to intrigue anyone, and it is well worth the two-hour drive. But before you plan a visit, do check the BC Parks website to find out if the tunnels are open.

Get directions to Othello Tunnels/Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park (1 hour 48 minute-drive from Pan Pacific Vancouver)

Learn the Art of Foraging

Wild Foraging in Canada Wild Foraging in Canada

As a family, go on an easy rainforest walk with an expert guide through BC’s forests, and depending on the season (and your interests), you can learn how to locate and identify coastal wild foods or wild mushrooms. Visit Swallowtail Canada to book a tour.

Take a Taxidermy Class

Taxidermy is certainly controversial—for some, it is about preserving beauty and knowledge, while others feel it disrespects the bodies of deceased animals. If you and your family have no objections towards taxidermy and are curious about how this is done, you can join a class to find out more. The eclectic Vancouver store Raven’s Veil offers workshops in squirrel and rat taxidermy, as well as moth pinning.
