Also known as the Red Fort, the partially built 17th-century Lalbagh Fort is one of the most popular attractions in Dhaka. Built in 1678 by a Mughal prince who left the city before its completion, the fort was left unfinished but still boasts an impressive sight. Its architecture showcases the signature artistry of the Mughal Empire.

In the present day, the fort has been transformed into a museum, housing Mughal period artefacts, including coins, paintings, carpets, swords and more. The fort’s expansive structure houses a mausoleum, mosque, and two-storied residence that once belonged to the Mughal governor of Bengal.

Keen to learn all about Bangladesh? The Bangladesh National Museum is a great place to start.

Visitors near and far are drawn to the museum’s finely-crafted Hindu and Buddhist Bengal sculptures, chiselled with intricate details. Beyond that, the museum has artefacts ranging from the prehistoric to the present, and is home to an immaculate collection of artefacts offering insights into the country’s storied past, told through ancient coins, stone inscriptions, sculptures, musical instruments and textiles. It also houses one of the largest collections of weapons and armour in the South-Asian subcontinent.

Visit the Abandoned Panam Nagar City

Have “visit an abandoned city” on your travel bucket list? Check it off on your Dhaka holiday! Make a trip to the abandoned ancient city of Panam Nagar, south of Dhaka—one of the earliest cities in Bangladesh that remains standing.

Once the capital of 15th century Bengal, the city used to be a vital trading and political centre. Although it now lies in ruins, the historical city boasts signature architectural works of the Mughal and British Colonial periods. A series of racial riots rocked the city during the Bengal Divide in 1947, leaving it deserted as the Hindus who lived in the city migrated to India. Floods, vandalism, and earthquakes further plagued the city, resulting in its present ruined condition.

In 2006, the World Monument Fund declared Panam Nagar one of the world’s top 100 ruinous historical establishments. Today, it is open for visitors to appreciate its once glorious architecture while admiring the Mughal monuments that were left behind. Among them are the Sonakanada Rover Fort, Ibrahim and Abdul Hamid Mosques, as well as the Panch Pir Mazar Shrine.

Visit the Goaldi Mosque

Fans of brick-walled edifices are in for a treat here. One of the few remaining architectural structures left from the mediaeval Sonargaon period, the Goadli Mosque is a must-visit in Dhaka. This unusual enclosed square mosque is distinguished by a cubical prayer chamber flanked by corner towers and entrances on three sides. There is no access to its interior—however, just marvelling at its reddish facade is quite enough. Adorned with exquisite terracotta-styled artworks and motifs, the brickwork on the mosque’s walls is enchanting. This, coupled with its isolated location, adds to its allure.
