Day 1: Immerse in Ancient Japanese Zen Culture

Start your first morning exploring ancient Kyoto with a hike up one of its most photographed attractions — the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famed for its thousands of torii gates. The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, and offers stunning views of Kyoto from the top.
After your morning walk, head to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. This Zen temple is famous for its top two stories completely covered in gold leaf. Admire the reflection of the pavilion in the serene pond, and snap a memorable Kyoto photo here.
Next, stop by Ryoan-ji, renowned for its rock garden. This Zen temple's minimalist design encourages quiet reflection, with carefully placed stones set in white gravel. Relax and contemplate the beauty of simplicity.
Wrap up your day at Heian Jingu Shrine, known for its massive torii gate and elegant architecture. This Shinto shrine celebrates the founding of Kyoto and features beautiful gardens with ponds, bridges, and seasonal blooms. To deepen your cultural experience, follow your visit with a traditional tea ceremony. Here, you can learn about the rich history and art behind the ritual while savouring the delicate flavours of matcha tea paired with traditional Japanese sweets.
End your evening with a kaiseki dinner, a multi-course Japanese meal showcasing Kyoto's seasonality and artistry. For food that resembles works of art, try Kikunoi Roan. Located near Kawaramachi Station, this Michelin-starred restaurant boasts exquisite dishes that are as delicious as they look. Indulge in unique creations like egg yolk marinated in white miso, corn sorbet, and crab broth-soaked rice with delicate crab chunks. Be sure to make a reservation to secure your spot and avoid disappointment.
Another restaurant to try is the Minokichi Honten Takeshigero. It offers a quintessential kaiseki dining experience, a traditional multi-course Japanese meal that highlights the region’s seasonal offerings through a series of meticulously prepared small dishes. Set in a beautifully preserved wooden building over 120 years old, the restaurant gives a sense of intimacy and historical charm. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted to reflect the inherent beauty of the ingredients, with a presentation that is as refined as the flavours themselves.

The gentle winding of the river provides both tranquil waters and occasional mild rapids, balancing serene and thrilling moments.
After you alight at the Hozugawa-Kudari landing site, explore the nearby Arashiyama, a picturesque district known for its bamboo forest. The towering bamboo stalks create a tranquil and almost mystical atmosphere. Be sure to capture the morning light as it filters through the grove, which is perfect for stunning photos.
