How to Have an Exciting Fall Weekend Getaway in Toronto

For a glorious morning out in nature, complete with a breathtaking view of fall foliage, head to Scenic Caves Nature Adventures, which is a two-hour drive from Toronto. To avoid being turned away at the gate, be sure to do two things: get there when it first opens as there is limited capacity due to Covid-19 social distancing, and bring appropriate footwear, i.e. hiking or running shoes.

Made it in? Go on the self-guided trails, which weave through caves and caverns carved millions of years ago by glacial ice. While on your hike, look out for these highlights:

  • Ice Cave: Feel the gradual change in temperature as you descend
  • Natural Refrigerator: A steady flow of cold air from the Ice Cave keeps the Natural Refrigerator cool, which was why this was an ideal food storage area for the Native populations in the 17th century.
  • Fat Man’s Misery: Enjoy the challenge of entering a cave and squeezing your way through a crevice that is only 36cm at its narrowest spot!
  • Suspension Bridge: The longest footbridge (128m) in Southern Ontario, this puts you in a unique vantage point over 300m above the Georgian Bay, to view 10,000 sq km of countryside, from Blue Mountain to Collingwood, and across the Bay to Wasaga Beach, Christian Island, and the distant shores of the Penetanguishene Peninsula. Suffice to say, the beauty of fall can be fully appreciated from this bridge.

Prefer a city centre walkabout? Use the self-guided Canadian Tree Tours to visit and learn more about trees in parks such as Toronto Islands and High Park, which are particularly lovely in fall.

Thanks to Halloween, fall is also the “spooky season!” To get in the mood, book a Toronto Haunted Night Walking Tour, or an evening Segway Ghost Tour in the historic Distillery District.

Fun Activities for Your Vancouver Fall Getaway

Enjoying your Vancouver break at a city centre hotel such as Pan Pacific Vancouver? You are mere minutes from Stanley Park, where you can take a leisurely walk to feast your eyes on gorgeous fall foliage

Prefer a day trip activity? Make a 20-minute drive to Grouse Mountain and take a self-guided eco walk to witness the majesty of the local trees in their autumn splendour. For an aerial view of the surrounding forest, go on the Mountain Ropes Adventure—a series of four rope courses requiring you to jump, climb, swing, and zip your way to the finish.

Alternatively, head to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park to enjoy the autumn view. Here, you can walk across the world-famous Capilano Suspension Bridge, make your way through seven suspension bridges attached to 250-year-old Douglas firs in a Treetops Adventure, and take the Cliffwalk journey—through walkways jutting out from a granite cliff—to discover the area’s rainforest vegetation.

You could also spend the day at Bowen Island, where the most challenging (and rewarding) hike is up Mount Gardner, Bowen Island’s tallest mountain with an elevation of 719m. It will take you three hours to reach the summit, where you will find two helicopter platforms to enjoy both lunch and the panoramic view—with Vancouver to the south, the Sunshine Coast to the north, and Vancouver Island to the west.

Wind down for the day with a sunset picnic at English Bay Beach. Keep things fuss-free by ordering takeout from a restaurant in the area and securing an empty spot to enjoy the view. But if—in the spirit of fall and Halloween—you would like to get your spooks on the go, you can join the Lost Souls of Gastown evening tour to venture into Vancouver’s earliest and most gruesome history, involving a devastating fire, smallpox outbreaks, and a murder mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

Top Things to Do in Whistler During Your Fall Getaway

Thinking of spending a weekend in Whistler during autumn? This is the perfect time in Whistler to slow down and let nature weave its magic around you.

For the most vivid autumn views, you can use the Valley Trail guide to visit Green Lake and Lost Lake. The Valley Trail is a paved trail and boardwalk network that connects Whistler’s neighbourhoods, lakes, and viewing spots, and visitors can explore more than 45km of trail by walking, cycling, or rollerblading. Biking on the Valley Trail is a great way to get around Whistler in the autumn season, and the suggested route for Whistler Village to Meadow Park Sports Centre will take you to both lakes for some of the best fall views in Whistler.

Fancy a more exciting way to see Whistler’s brilliant fall colours? Book a ziplining adventure through the forest!

To truly relax in the beauty of your surroundings, treat yourself to a hydrotherapy session at Scandinave Spa Whistler, a silent, technology-free spa that sits on the edge of the Lost Lake Park spruce and cedar forest. Hydrotherapy is a Finnish practice dating back thousands of years, using a hot-cold-relax cycle to recharge your body and mind.

In the evening, take the opportunity to check out Whistler’s best restaurants, including Rimrock Cafe and Red Door Bistro.

For a unique Whistler dining experience under the stars, head to The Raven Room, located within Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre, where you can savour your meal in an outdoor private dome for an unforgettable evening.

For late-night drinks and bites, the Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub and Patio located at Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside offers hearty pub fare and an authentic Gaelic cheer—complemented by a renowned selection of draft and craft beers.
