After a hot and busy day, nothing beats cooling off in a conservatory while surrounded by exotic flora from around the world.

Gardens by the Bay’s famed climate-controlled conservatories are open till 8:30pm daily. Walk through the Flower Dome, kept at 23°C to 25°C to mimic the cool and dry Mediterranean climate, and enjoy seasonally changing flower displays over its sprawling 1.2 hectares. Humidity is maintained at a comfortable 60% to 80%, so you won’t be perspiring as much here. 

Scale the highlands at the misty Cloud Forest. Come close to highland plants with conditions similar to tropical cloud forests and mountainsides. Featuring the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, a towering cloud walk, and a treetop walk, the Cloud Forest is a must-visit location at Gardens by the Bay.

For a well-rounded experience, revel in panoramic views from the Supertree Observatory that is 50 metres above ground, an iconic spot that is not to be missed.

Originally built in 1933 by M. A. Namazie in a neoclassical style, Capitol Theatre was one of Singapore’s earliest movie theatres. After the cinema ceased operations in 1998, the building was redeveloped and reopened as part of Capitol Piazza shopping and theatre complex in recent years.

Now both a cinema and performance venue, the adjacent mall’s open piazza is a central and classy spot for people-watching and dining with friends. If you are there on movie gala nights, you might notice the venue’s rotational floor system that customises seating for various performance types, and state-of-the-art sound and visual facilities.

On Friday evenings, the Peranakan Museum is open late till 9:00pm. A tribute to the exquisite and extravagant lifestyles of affluent Southeast Asian Peranakan communities, the museum is housed in the former Tao Nan Chinese School built in 1912, covering three floors of intimate gallery space.

With models of Peranakan home layouts and furnishing and personal clothing and jewellery on display, you will feel as though you are visiting a historical home of a rich Baba (Peranakan man) and Nonya (Peranakan lady).

Look out for its displays of intricate and finely filigreed hand-sewn needlework and embroidery; few artisans are able to carry out this labour-intensive process today.

Ann Siang Hill Park is a surprisingly quiet patch of green near the busy Chinatown and Telok Ayer downtown enclaves. Named after the landowner Chia Ann Siang, it used to be near a Cantonese burial ground and a Malay school.

A short stroll away from the park is the Thian Hock Keng temple. A national monument which received an honourable mention in the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards, the temple is situated on Telok Ayer Street near the Amoy Street side lane uphill entrance to the park beside Telok Ayer Green.

The park is an ideal spot to walk off those extra calories you may have put on at the nearby array of Korean and Japanese restaurants. Or you can head to nearby popular cocktail bars such as Employees Only, Bitters and Love, and The Spiffy Dapper lining Amoy and Telok Ayer streets.
