10 Best Eco Activities

For a truly relaxing eco-staycation, let someone else plan your green local travel itinerary for you! Here are some family-friendly green tours for that much awaited green retreat.

1. Upcycling Trash Through Art

One person's trash can be another's treasure.

Trash-Sure, a SG Green Plan endorsed sustainability campaign aims to deliver the important message for all of us to be more sustainable through the power of art. As part of this campaign, world-renowned Portuguese street artist Bordalo II and his team have completed a magnificent 10-metre by 7-metre tiger sculpture using trash collected in Singapore, which now sits in front of the Lattice Dome at Bayfront Plaza, Gardens by the Bay.

2. Spend a Day at a Kampong and Farm

Enjoy a fun-filled green day out in Singapore, away from the city bustle! You can plan a visit to Lorong Kampong Buangkok, Singapore’s last-surviving “village”; go on a scenic walk at Upper Seletar Reservoir; and head to a vegetable farm (either Bollywood Veggies or Kok Fah Technology Farm) to cap your rustic excursion!

3. Get to Know the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Enter the wild at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, and unearth a world filled with rich biodiversity and natural beauty as you explore the ecological wetlands and extensive mangrove forest.

With an experienced guide leading the way, you’ll get to see mudskippers, mud lobsters, monitor lizards, and more in their natural habitats. Bird lovers will also be able to spot resident birds such as herons, kingfishers, and sunbirds. Do remember to bring along a tripod and a long-range zoom lens to capture the wonderful sights here!

4. Experience Nature and Nostalgia at Pulau Ubin and the Chek Jawa Wetlands

Be one with nature when you explore Pulau Ubin! You can choose to rent a bicycle, or use the walking trail to get to the Chek Jawa wetlands, which is located about 3km (or a 40-minute walk) from the Pulau Ubin jetty. For nature lovers, Chek Jawa is a goldmine, as it is an area where six natural habitats converge, thus making it one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see seahorses, sea stars, sea anemones, and even octopuses!

5. Learn About Sustainability In Fish Farming

Due to Singapore's lack of land space, much of our food is imported. However, we do have local fish farms that produce about 10% of our local seafood needs. One such farm is Dragonwana, which mainly rears two types of fish for consumption, Jade Perch and Empurau. Get in touch with them to find out the ins and outs of fish farming—from breeding and feeding to harvesting. You'll also get a peek at their Arowana farm, and learn why Arowana fish are so highly prized in Asia!

6. Take a Spice Tour through Fort Canning Park

Have you heard of cloves being applied directly to the gums to treat a toothache, or nutmeg being used as a cure for insomnia and other health conditions? Discover the different spices growing in Fort Canning Park, and find out how they were valued for their medicinal properties in the past.

Some spices were also considered precious commodities during colonial times. In fact, the founder of modern Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles, ordered the experimental planting of clove and nutmeg trees at Fort Canning Hill as these were the cash crops of the day!

7. Explore Labrador Nature Reserve

Labrador Nature Reserve is a rich forest of biodiversity that also happens to have played a major part in Singapore’s military history. Do keep your eye peeled for fascinating historical war sites, such as a WWII fort, built in 1878 to defend Singapore’s Keppel Harbour.

8. Go Green With Greens

Would you like to learn how to properly pot a plant, or even try your hand at paddy planting? During this hands-on tour, aspiring urban farmers will visit Bollywood Veggies to learn how to plant a herb and care for it—the plant is yours to keep! You’ll also get a quick lesson on rice farming, which includes the chance to get your hands dirty by actually planting the paddy. After which, you’ll head to the Sembawang Hot Spring Park for some well-deserved rest and relaxation before calling it a day.

9. Discover Singapore’s Water Story

Water is a precious resource, and ensuring an adequate water supply is integral for every nation. How do we keep the water from our taps from running out in Singapore—a tiny island with limited catchment areas for natural rainwater? Join this tour to learn more about Singapore’s water challenges, and the herculean efforts that our country has made to maintain sustainability through waste and water management.

10. Hike along Singapore’s Southern Coastal Trail

Craving some time away from the city? Book your spot in this two-hour walking tour that will take you on Singapore's Southern Coastal Trail. Accompanied by a guide, you will start your walk along Keppel Bay, a great spot to view the city's picturesque skyline. The tour will then take you to Labrador Nature Reserve, where you can find all sorts of habitats, from mudflats and mangroves to a forest—the Adinandra belukar—and a beautiful rocky sea-cliff. If you’re curious about the history of the places that you will see, don't hesitate to ask your knowledgeable guide for background information!
